Restaurants in New York City?

A few friends and I are planning to go to New York City soon and want to take one night to go out to a really nice dinner. Does anyone have a favorite “fine dining establishment” they can recommend? We would like something that is fairly diverse where we can all find something we like so preferably not just one thing e.g. Italian, Greek, Mexican we would rather have a very nicely blended restaurant.
I visited NYC for the first time last week and there are tons of restaurants there. But I never seen any restaurant with many diverse food because most of the restaurants are really really small. I was surprised.
i think Emiril and Gordon Ramsey both have fusion restaurants in NYC and the food there is always amazing
