For parents of young children who are thinking of a holiday or long weekend destination, New York may not seem like an obvious option. It is after all a sprawling city filled with some of the world’s finest shopping and dining experiences, making it a fabulous short break or romantic get-away; but with children in tow, it may not on the surface seem like the ideal destination.
However, New York has much more to offer in the way of entertaining children than you may initially think. From museums to a zoo and skating rink, New York has plenty to entertain both young and old.
New York’s star attractions can be fun for all ages. The Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building offer iconic images of New York, with the latter providing breathtaking views over the city. If you fancy more of an adventure then why not organise a helicopter ride around Manhattan to get a real bird’s eye view?
Back on the ground, Central Park provides many attractions to entertain the children, including activities and playgroups arranged throughout the week. As such, the Central Park Zoo is a major draw for children of all ages, with monkeys and penguins proving big hits. In fact, it has been set up by the zoo whereby children can meet some of the gentler animals within the zoo.
New York is also home to many different museums, some of which can offer great fun for the children. The Children’s Museum of the Arts, for example, is essentially an art playground where kids are encouraged to paint, sculpt, dress up and even play musical instruments within the museum.
The American Museum of Natural History is another popular location for children. It is one of the most famous attractions in the city with plenty to see and do spread over a vast area. The whole family could spend hours within the museum – and be sure to head to the famous dinosaur halls, which will leave the kids in awe.
New York is a city of celebration, and coordinating your visit with one of the many festivals, parades or carnivals organised throughout the year is a great way to keep the children amused. From the St Patrick’s Day Parade in March to the absurd Mermaid Parade in June, there is always something going on in the streets of New York.
Whatever time of year you choose to visit, it can prove beneficial to plan your trip well in advance. It is also good to know that there are plenty of New York hotels available throughout the city, so you can organise your accommodation to fit your itinerary. And of course, when organising your trip, be sure to include enough activities that will keep the children happy!
