If I’m going to New York City for 9 days, how much cash should I bring with me to spend?

See, I wanna do everything: fine dining for at least one day in Manhattan; eat out 3-5 times, especially in Manhattan (my grandma will mainly cook at home for me, so money for food is pretty much unnecessary); I might go to all the attractions (i.e. the Met, a Yankees game) and maybe to Coney Island; eat in my hometown in Connecticut and also in New Jersey (I’m renting a car, so I don’t need transportation money). Also, I want to go shopping, but not too much, and I’m not buying makeup and I plan to get some jewelry, purse(s) and shoes. So, how much money should I bring with me? Is $500 too little or do I need at least $1,000?

I would take a thousand…just to be on the safe side. Have fun in NYC

If your going to New York City, someone will pick your pocket or mug you, so don’t bring much.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT waste your time going into the Statue of Liberty. Took us almost 5 hours to get to go inside, then, we were done in 10 mins.

I would bring $100 a day with you, and some extra luggage. That’s a good way to plan for NYC. Really, have an ATM card, a credit card, and about $100 cash on hand. You can always go get more cash from a SAFE ATM machine. Some things you want to charge though, be a lot easier for you.

I’d take 2 grand…if 1 thousand is all you can afford, take it, but keep some in several locations so that if you are mugged, the thief can’t get it all in one whack.

First of all – I don’t know why everyone is talking about getting mugged. I have lived here for 9 1/2 years and have not only never been mugged – I don’t know anyone who has.

Let common sense prevail – don’t go to dark unpopulated areas – just like anywhere else you live or travel.

That said – it is always wisest to use a credit card and spend very little in cash. If you are driving, parking will not be cheap, but you can use a credit card to pay. Almost all restaurants (definitely not all) take credit cards.

If this is a once in lifetime type trip for you, don’t worry about how much money you spend. Be smart about taking public transportation – parking is so expensive here – and at Shea and Yankee Stadium – forget about it… Be careful at Coney Island. It’s not terribly unsafe – just a little sketchy is all. Definitely use your credit card for shopping. Don’t buy anything you could buy at home – the tax here is 8.375%

    Have fun!
