i need some help with how to take new york subway?

i have a project that i have to travel around new york with limited money(abt $300),including dining or hotel or transportation fees.
i havent been to ny before, and i just couldnt figure out how to take the subway from the places i want to go to another places..
so im here to ask help..hope somebody from ny could do me a favor..plz..

First, you need to buy a metrocard, you can get it at any stand on the street in the city. Then, you go to the train you wanna take, take the stairs down (or up) and you see things that looks like a metal detector, and you slide a metrocard thru it. Then, ride!!! nothing stops you from gettin out
